The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at Trine University would like to invite the campus community to their Valentine’s Day party.
The party will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, from 7pm to 9pm in Fabiani Theater at the University Center. When asked why the GSA wanted to host a Valentine’s event, President Alicia Dolan said, “As Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, we want to remind students that love is love, and all forms of love are valid, true, and real, so long as they’re between mutually consenting adults.” By hosting a party like this, the GSA hopes to show that love in all forms is real and should be accepted.
When guests arrive Tuesday they will be encouraged to decorate sugar cookies and make a sign to explain their identification to and within GSA. At 8:30pm anyone who wants to present his or her signs will be able to walk down a catwalk. The GSA hopes to show that a single identifier cannot explain a person entirely. “People are athletes, academics, friends, sons, daughters, gamers, and members of the LGBT+ community, all at the same time,” said Dolan.
The GSA was established in the spring semester of 2015. Alicia Dolan, who has been an active member from the start of GSA, began her presidency in the fall semester of 2016. She said, “The mission and purpose of the GSA is to promote equality and diversity on the Trine University campus regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as to educate and support the student body about LGBT+ and trans issues.”
If anyone would like to become a member of the GSA they can find contact information and meeting times on their new webpage.
